This training introduces practical ways to provide gender-affirming and competent care for transgender and gender diverse (TGD) youth. We will review gender diversity as a construct, review terminology, recognize disparities and barriers to care, and provide applicable skills for working with TGD youth and their families. Participants will learn best practices informed by The World Professional Association for Transgender Health (WPATH).

This training will be delivered by Jonna Finocchio, a licensed clinical social worker with over 12 years of experience working with gender diverse individuals at various levels of care.

Transgender and gender diverse (TGD) youth face extensive, systemic discrimination across settings. Lack of knowledgeable providers is one of the most commonly cited barriers to healthcare for TGD youth.

At the conclusion of this training, participants will be able to:

  1. Understand the difference between biological sex, gender identity, gender expression, and sexual/romantic orientation. 
  2. Utilize gender-affirming and competent terminology to provide appropriate care.
  3. Recognize, understand, and navigate disparities and barriers to care for TGD. 
  4. Apply practical gender-affirming skills when working with TGD youth and their families.
