Youth in the Transgender and Gender-Diverse (TGD) community are often misunderstood and ostracized. A 2021 national school climate survey on the experiences of LGBTQ+ youth in schools found that 50% have felt unsafe at school because of their sexual orientation, 62% because of their gender expression, and 74% because of their gender. As a result of these disparities, TGD youth have higher rates of suicide, suicidal thoughts and self-injury. However, research also shows that just one “trusted adult” — in school or at home – can make a difference. This presentation will provide an introduction to gender diversity and how schools can partner to create supportive environments for TGD youth. Participants will learn practical skills for supporting TGD youth and their families.
